Everyday illnesses or accidents can interfere with your ability to work. Even a short time away from work can make it difficult to manage household costs. Disability coverage provides financial support to help you manage expenses during this time.
Short-Term Disability (STD)
As a City of Plano employee, you can elect Short-Term Disability (STD) insurance at your expense to help replace a portion of your income if you become injured or ill. After an elimination period of 21 days (the later of 21 days or when sick time is exhausted), the benefit pays 60% of your base salary up to $1,500 per week for up to 23 weeks.
You must be approved by the insurance carrier to be eligible for STD benefits. For more information, refer to your Summary Plan Description (SPD).

Long-Term Disability (LTD)
The City of Plano offers Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage through OneAmerica if you cannot work due to illness or injury. If you remain totally disabled for more than 180 days, you may be eligible for LTD benefits. The City automatically provides LTD benefits that replace 40% of your base pay up to $6,000 per month.
Your LTD benefit is reduced by Social Security and any other disability income you are eligible to receive. Benefits may continue up to Social Security Normal Retirement Age if you continue to meet the definition of disability.
You must be approved by the insurance carrier to receive LTD benefits. For more details, refer to your SPD. Employees may purchase additional LTD coverage as a new hire or during Open Enrollment.
